Fr. 181. 1880 $100 Legal Tender Note. PMG Choice Very Fine 35.

A Scarcely Seen Large Size Type and Denomination Rare at any Grade Level Fr. 181. 1880 $100 Legal Tender Note. PMG Choice Very Fine 35. Part of a population that numbers around 45 pieces according to available records when one includes institutional survivors. Bidders nonetheless have here for their consideration a moderately circulated example of a $100 Legal Tender Note issued under the Lyons - Roberts signature combination current between 1898 and 1905. Here one may behold no shortage of attractive qualities that effortlessly distinguish this design among contemporary Legal Tender Notes. Anchored by a portrait of Abraham Lincoln at left adapted from Anthony Berger's iconic 1864 photograph of the then-sitting President, Lincoln's portrait is met by the rightmost vignette entitled Reconstruction which offers an abstract and allegorical view of contemporary events from when this design was first introduced in-part with the Series of 1869. Yet these elements are collectively amplified by both the red-blue Treasury overprint and a veritable palette of neutral tones and various shades of green that account for the engraved design and collectively speak to a sight that one will appreciate even before a consideration of the numismatic calculus. Speaking strictly in numismatic terms though, it takes little to reason that any $100 Legal Tender Note issued under the Series of 1880 is a scarce opportunity to be had. Take for example the Fr. 181 which represents the note offered in this lot. Even though that signature combination may seem "common" with approximately 46 pieces recorded by Track & Price, that finding is undoubtedly complicated by a number of institutional notes. This specific Friedberg Number records eight pieces split among various institutional collections and speaks to a common thread seen among other signature combinations that found use on this design and denomination. Further held together with a numerical grade of "35" that sets this note among the "upper half" of the recorded population in technical terms, it takes hardly a second thought or major logical leap to understand that this is indeed an opportunity to be had by the discerning specialist. Estimate: $15,000 - $25,000. Click here for certification details from PMG.
