Fr. 1197. 1882 $50 Gold Certificate. PMG Very Fine 25.

Fr. 1197. 1882 $50 Gold Certificate. PMG Very Fine 25. Seen with a degree of infrequency compared to the design introduced for the Series of 1913 and later reused for the Series of 1922. Series of 1882 $50 Gold Certificates are something of an oddity and a scarce one at that. Featuring a portrait of Silas Wright at left, Wright holds the distinction of being one of the most obscure personalities to grace a note from this period along with his contemporary Thomas Hart Benton of Missouri. Born in 1795, Wright led a fairly distinguished political career beginning in the 1820s before ultimately becoming Governor of New York in 1844. Wright was nonetheless aligned with the Jacksonians in Congress and supported Andrew Jackson's "Bank War" and like many of his political fellows upheld the virtues of "Hard Money" like silver and gold. This particular specimen represents the latest iteration of the design that featured Wright's portrait on account of the Napier - McClung signature combination that was current from 1911 to 1912 and offers a good degree of color that reflects the popularity of Gold Certificates as a class even in the face of a singular comment from PMG. PMG comments "Stains." Estimate: $2,000 - $3,000. Click here for certification details from PMG.
