Fr. 1012b. 1914 Red Seal $50 Federal Reserve Note. Boston. PCGS Banknote

A Major Type Rarity at this Level of Preservation Fr. 1012b. 1914 Red Seal $50 Federal Reserve Note. Boston. PCGS Banknote Extremely Fine 40. A large size $50 regardless of type is always going to be a scarce sight at any grade level. Yet such a distinction fails to capture the rarity of any $50 Federal Reserve Note issued under the Series of 1914 that also happens to feature a red Treasury overprint. Each Federal Reserve district records less than two dozen notes per Track & Price with the Fr. 1016b from Richmond accounting for the largest population with 23 known pieces. St. Louis records a population of 20 pieces for the Fr. 1019b with a number of pieces clustered towards the middle of the grading spectrum. Yet that figure fails to account for the fact that these notes are seldom ever traded regardless of condition. Among those pieces this specimen stands among limited company and offers exceptional eye appeal brought to form by every element whether engraved or overprinted. The shade of red endemic to the Treasury overprint that was retired in 1915 after it was found to fade in circulation is exceedingly attractive on this specimen and evokes comparisons to something that had only just rolled off the press at the Bureau of Engraving & Printing in 1914. Distinct embossing is also evident on the verso and makes for a distinctive sight even against the female allegorical figure representative of the Panama Canal who stands between a merchant vessel and a dreadnaught-type battleship that appears to represent either the Florida or Wyoming Class that had only just entered service with the United States Navy in the early 1910s. Further held together with the rarity of these notes at this grade level and the grade assigned by PCGS Banknote, it takes little to reason that this visually distinctive survivor is a prospective opportunity for the discerning specialist and one sure to see its share of attention even before the hammer falls on this remarkable item. PCGS Banknote Pop 1/None Finer. Estimate: $6,000 - $8,000. Click here for certification details from PCGS Banknote.
