DESCRIPTION: I present to you a PRECIOUS AND MONUMENTAL COMPLETE FOUR-VOLUME IN-FOLIO SET of the "CONSILIORUM SIVE RESPONSORUM" by the renowned jurist, lawyer and Italian senator Giovanni Pietro Sordo (c.1528-1598), in Latin Ioannes Petrus Surdus, the leading figure of Mantua’s Sacred Senate who also served as ambassador of Duke Vincenzo Gonzaga to the Holy See during the pontificate of Clement VIII. Surdus was one of the most famous and respected jurists of his time, and his works were continuously reprinted until the mid-17th century. This extraordinary set contains, fully in 4 volumes, the "CONSILIORUM SIVE RESPONSORUM", the author’s major work, a monumental compilation of legal opinions (Consilia) and juridical answers where Surdus resolves with ingenuity complex cases on succession law, feudal law, trusts, contracts, minority and family law. As an appendix to Volume IV, we will find "Decisiones Sacri Mantuani Senatus", a compilation of some sentences and jurisprudence of the Sacred Mantuan Senate on feudal and testamentary matters. EXTRAORDINARY NOBILIARY AND JURIDICAL PROVENANCE OF THE 17th CENTURY The bindings preserve an impeccable and crisp period handwritten signature (ex-libris) in authentic 17th-century baroque script: "Don Francisco de Toledo". This signature directly links the work to the circle of high magistrates, oidores of the Royal Chancelleries of the Crown of Castile, or royal advisers belonging to the noble line of the House of Toledo, who required this high European jurisprudence in their private legal offices. An exceptional historical provenance detail. PRECIOUS AND MONUMENTAL COMPLETE LEGAL SET IN 4 VOLUMES IN-FOLIO.. DO NOT LET IT SLIP AWAY YEAR AND PLACE OF PUBLICATION: • Volumes I, II and III (Consilia): Frankfurt am Main (Germany), 1599 (M. D. XCIX). • Volume IV (Consilia + Decisions): Venice (Italy), 1610 (M DC X). LANGUAGE: Latin (Original Version). SIZE AND BINDING: Dimensions: Large Folio format 36 x 24 cm. Pagination: 4 complete volumes. Volume 1: [8], 753, [51] pp.; Volume 2: [8], 687, [49] pp.; Volume 3: 920, [38] pp.; Volume 4: [12], 538, [2], [12], 84 pp.. Weight: 11.5 kg. COMPLETE WORK. CONDITION: Beautiful uniform period binding in full mottled calf, in very good condition with some wear, as shown in photos. Spine with five raised bands decorated with bright gold motifs inspired by plant ornament and red gilt-tilting on red morocco, with the author’s name, the work and volume number in gold lettering. Edges stained red. The interior is in good condition, as shown in photos. Auras of old dampness and some small moth damage at the margins. Baroque handwritten signatures of "Don Francisco de Toledo" on the covers. A copy illustrated with initials impressed in wood and several lovely engravings on the cover and colophon, highlighting the legendary winged horse PEGASUS OVER THE CADUCEUS, the ikon imprint of the prestigious German humanist printers and editors Wechel. The legendary winged horse Pegasus, in classical mythology, represents the flight of the soul, poetic inspiration, immortality and the elevation of knowledge and the sciences toward the divine. The caduceus (the staff with two serpents and wings) is the staff of the god Hermes (Mercury), traditionally associated with commerce, eloquence, wisdom, science and harmony. Together they formed a powerful humanist allegory linking legal wisdom (the caduceus) with inspiration and intellectual elevation (Pegasus). ART, HISTORY AND JURISPRUDENCE WITH NOBILIARY PROVENANCE OF THE 17th CENTURY IN A PRECIOUS FOUR-VOLUME FOLIO SET OF A CLASSIC OF LAW. DO NOT LET IT ESCAPE.
