A charming tall six-panel Japanese folding screen 屏風 (byôbu) with a lively painting of everyday life during the Edo period. The extensive composition presents numerous small scenes of townspeople engaged in seasonal activities, leisure and daily pursuits, spread among traditional houses, gardens, pine trees and winding streams. Stylized bands of clouds divide the different scenes. In the upper left, Boys’ Day 端午の節句 (Tango no sekku) is suggested by a large carp streamer 鯉幟 (koinobori), while children nearby are dressed as samurai and play together. Below, figures work in flooded rice paddies, planting young rice seedlings. Elsewhere, women and children stroll between houses and temple buildings, people gather around a large ceremonial vessel, and vendors and travellers move through the landscape. In the upper right, two women hold rectangular wooden battledores 羽子板 (hagoita), used for playing 羽根突き (hanetsuki), a game traditionally associated with the New Year. Nearby, children appear to be preparing a kite. The painting is executed in colour and ink on mulberry paper over a silver-leaf ground, which has oxidised extensively over time to a warm golden-brown tone with an attractive aged patina. The screen is surrounded by a single blue patterned brocade border and enclosed within a black lacquered wooden frame fitted with protective metal hardware. The reverse is covered with dark patterned paper. Period: Japan - circa 1900 (Meiji period) Dimensions: Height 172.5 cm, Total width 368.2 cm (2 × 62.7 cm and 4 × 60.7 cm). In very good restored condition with traces of age on both sides. The oxidised silver-leaf ground has developed an extensive natural patina, with small losses to the paper and various old restorations, particularly along the hinges. A more visible blue-toned restoration is present in the water area towards the upper left. Please refer to the photographs for a clear impression of the condition. The folding screen is well suited for mounting flat on a wall and presenting as a single work of art, but can also be displayed as a standalone piece. When shipped, a certificate of authenticity will be included.
