Flos – Achille & Pier Giacomo Castiglioni – Gatto Piccolo Table Lamp – Cocoon Resin 2005 New Edition. An iconic example of Italian lighting design: the Gatto Piccolo table lamp, designed in 1960 by Achille and Pier Giacomo Castiglioni for Flos. Gatto was created during the Castiglioni brothers’ experimentation with Cocoon, an innovative material and production technique that became closely associated with some of the most distinctive Flos lamps of the 1960s. The diffuser is produced by spraying a special resin over an internal steel structure. The resulting thin, fibrous and translucent membrane creates the lamp’s characteristic organic shape while beautifully filtering the light. When switched off, Gatto appears as an elegant sculptural object with a delicate ivory-white surface and clearly visible internal structure. When illuminated, the Cocoon diffuser produces a soft, warm and atmospheric diffused light, highlighting the fascinating texture of the material. Its distinctive hourglass silhouette and sculptural presence make Gatto Piccolo an instantly recognisable piece of Italian Mid-Century Modern design.
