Flos - Achille Castiglioni

Flos Arco LED – Achille and Pier Giacomo Castiglioni, 1962 Icon of Italian design from the 20th century, Arco is one of the most celebrated and recognizable lamps designed by Achille and Pier Giacomo Castiglioni for Flos. Designed in 1962, it represents a true masterpiece of Italian industrial design, capable of combining formal research, engineering, and functionality in an object that has become part of design history. The characteristic arch-shaped structure stems from a simple yet revolutionary idea: to bring light over a table or living area without using a ceiling light source. The massive Carrara marble base, a distinctive element of the project, ensures stability and gives the lamp a sculptural and elegant presence. From it rises the long satin-finished stainless steel telescopic stem, which culminates in the characteristic swiveling reflector in polished steel. This is the LED version, a technologically evolved reinterpretation of the iconic original design. Compared to the traditional Arco version with a bulb and a silver reflector, the LED version offers a greater amount of light, ensuring brighter, more uniform, and more efficient illumination. The LED source also enables better light quality with modest energy consumption and a long life, while preserving the aesthetic purity of the Castiglioni’s design. An additional advantage of the LED version is the possibility to dim the light, allowing the luminance to be adjusted to the needs and desired atmosphere. It is therefore possible to switch from a more intense and functional illumination, ideal for lighting a dining table or a work area, to a softer and more intimate light, perfect for a living environment. The swiveling reflector also allows precise light direction, making Arco extremely versatile. The combination of Carrara marble, steel, and light perfectly expresses the Castiglioni design philosophy: turning a practical necessity into a smart, essential, and surprisingly innovative solution. Over sixty years after its design, Arco remains extraordinarily relevant and is still today one of the most representative objects of Italian design. Its historical and cultural value is further evidenced by Arco’s presence in the permanent collection of the Museum of Modern Art (MoMA) in New York, confirming its status as an international design icon. - Condition: Excellent condition, with minimal signs of use compatible with age and normal use - Age: 21st century, LED version of the iconic project from 1962 - Designer: Achille and Pier Giacomo Castiglioni - Manufacturer: Flos - Material: Carrara marble, satin-finished stainless steel, and polished steel - Origin: Italy - Dimensions (cm): approximately 175 × 220 × 232 (L × D × H) - Colors: White marble, satin-finished steel, and polished steel - Style: Modern, Mid-Century Modern, Italian design - Type: Arc floor lamp - Light source: LED - Regulation: Dimmerable
