Publication: London, The Willow Press Limited, 1946 Formatting: 8vo, pp. 282. Condition Report: Very Good: The book remains a structurally sound and attractive. The binding appears tight and firm, with the visible yellow cloth along the edges exhibiting only minor shelf-wear and light handling. The text block is solid, with the preliminary pages remaining remarkably legible and bright despite the typical, mild age-toning and faint edge-foxing expected of post-war paper stock. Crucially, the book is housed in its striking original black pictorial dust jacket designed by A. Horowicz; this jacket is protected in a clear removable sleeve, retaining unoxidised, vivid colours across the front panel's medical chart and yellow rose graphic, with only mild rubbing to the extremities and some light browning to the inner flaps. Catalogue Note: First UK Edition of MichaÅ ChoromaÅskiâs celebrated Polish novel, translated into English by Eileen Arthurton. The copyright page proudly confirms its status as the first iteration published in Great Britain. The volume is distinguished by its stunning original dust jacket, crafted by A. Horowicz, which incorporates a haunting modernist motif of a medical chart juxtaposed with a drooping yellow rose. While ChoromaÅski's psychological masterpiece, originally published in Warsaw in 1932, garnered the First Prize from the Polish Academy of Literature, finding early English-language editions intact with their original, unclipped jackets has become increasingly uncommon on the open antiquarian market. Set during a tumultuous and unnatural autumn in Poland, Jealousy and Medicine is a feverish psychological thriller that explores the destructive, labyrinthine nature of suspicion and passion. The novel traces a hallucinatory love triangle between Widmar, an aging husband, his enigmatic wife Rebecca, and Dr. Tamten, a brilliant but compromised surgeon. As the boundaries blur between medical ethics and ordinary human deceit, ChoromaÅski pioneers fragmented timelines to plunge the reader directly into the escalating madness of the jealous mind. Praised by critics as akin to the works of Proust, Mann, and Conrad, it remains a deeply unsettling exploration of betrayal and obsession.
