Amethyst is the violet variety of quartz. It was once the subject of an ancient myth: its name is derived from the Greek ἀμέθυστος (amethystos) - "counteracting intoxication" - and meant that its wearer was protected from the intoxicating effects of wine. Who wouldn't have wanted to call an amethyst their own? This pendant is dedicated to five of these magnificent gemstones. The amethysts are set between fine spiral tendrils of warm, shimmering gold, which impressively accentuates their varying depths and vibrant purple. The gold setting plays around the stones to create a stylized floral design, allowing each amethyst to shine on its own, while together they create a balanced, elegantly sparkling overall picture. Three small natural pearls in flower-shaped settings further enhance the design. The style and workmanship of the pendant allow us to date it to around 1890, when it was probably created as part of a larger necklace. At this time, pieces of jewellery with amethysts told of the fascinating new discoveries overseas: the magnificent stones came from Brazil, where important deposits of high-quality amethysts had been discovered around 1840. We discovered the pendant as it is in London, where it was complemented by a gold Figaro chain. This means that the well-preserved piece of jewellery can be worn immediately.
