The book examines, in turn, sight, hearing, smell, taste, and touch, combining literary texts, historical documents, and a wealth of illustrations. It thus traces the various representations of desire and sensuality throughout the centuries. Numerous black-and-white and color illustrations: old photographs, postcards, lithographs, engravings, drawings, caricatures, and erotic documents, including several rare or seldom-reproduced pieces. Notably featuring works or illustrations by Giorgio Baffo, André Prévôt, Margit Gaál, and Paul Verlaine, as well as numerous anonymous documents from the 19th and 20th centuries.
