Félicien Bobeldijk (1876–1964) - Brink te Laren

This compact forest scene by Félicien Bobeldijk (1876–1964) shows a densely grown forest, built up of a rhythm of dark, almost vertical trunks. Between the trunks the landscape opens to lighter areas in the background. The forest floor is heavy and shadowed, with scattered accents of rust brown, ocher and muted green. The painting technique is strong and direct. Short, thick impasto strokes and broader brushstrokes alternate, with the almost black trunks standing out sharply against the lighter gray‑white and brown‑green background. The warm reddish-brown tones give the forest a distinctly autumnal character. The limited dimensions and compact composition reinforce the character of a directly painted landscape study. Executed in oil on panel and signed lower left. Dimensions of the work about 17 × 22 cm; with frame about 34 × 39 × 4 cm. Provenance: private collection, F. de V., Eindhoven. Artist biography Félicien Bobeldijk (1876–1964), also known as Fiel Bobeldijk, was a Dutch painter and draftsman. His oeuvre includes landscapes, cityscapes, interiors and figure studies, in which he regularly worked with a loose, visible brushwork and a predominantly muted color palette. Forest and landscape motifs occupy a recognizable place within his painting. Bobeldijk was active in the Dutch artist milieu of the first half of the twentieth century and maintained contacts with several contemporaries. The RKD – Netherlands Institute for Art History maintains a separate archive on Félicien Bobeldijk, acquired in 2004.
