Important French treatise on infant medicine of the 19th century, published in 1845 and preserved intact in two homogeneous volumes. Practical treatise on childhood diseases, based on numerous clinical observations, by F. Barrier, surgeon designated at the Hôtel-Dieu of Lyon and former intern at the Hôpital des Enfants malades of Paris. Paris, Fortin, Masson et Cie – Lyon, Charles Savy jeune, 1845. Second enlarged and revised edition. This edition considerably expands the initial work published in 1842 and constitutes a particularly interesting testimony to the rise of pediatrics and clinical infantile medicine in the mid-19th century. The author covers a very wide range of child pathologies: diseases of the bronchi and lungs, whooping cough, pneumonia, pleurisy, croup, tuberculosis, teething troubles, diseases of the mouth and pharynx, thrush, gastrointestinal diseases, typhoid fever, genitourinary ailments, nervous and convulsive diseases as well as various infectious diseases, including syphilis of the newborn. The work largely rests on numerous clinical observations, giving a particularly interesting insight into hospital practice and pediatric treatments in the mid-19th century. Volume I: 694 pages of text, followed by the table. Volume II: 694 pages of text, followed by the table. Thus 1,388 pages of text for the two volumes, to which are added the front matter and the tables. Old uniform bindings in half-black leather, spine with raised bands adorned with cold tooling, gilt title and volume numbers, marbled boards. The whole is distinguished above all by the remarkable freshness of its interiors: exceptionally light and clean paper for works from 1845, very sharp and well contrasted printing, with only a few foxings and occasional marks of time. The bindings show some rubbing and signs of use, mainly on the first volume, while preserving an overall fine presentation. Very beautiful complete medical set in two volumes, particularly appealing for its remarkable interior condition.
