Extravagant Art Deco Ring with Diamonds in Platinum and White Gold, c. 1925

“Modernism in jewelry can be defined as a direct adaptation from oil paintings. It displays the same clear divisions in colors and planes and embraces the Cubist style while adapting it to its own needs.” – This was reported by the American journal The Jewelers’ Circular in 1926. This observation also applies to the ring in question, whose rectangular ring face already resembles a painting format. Geometric shapes created through the finest hand-pierced openwork, combined with small and large diamonds in an asymmetrical composition, evoke a work of abstract Cubist art or a graphic design of Bauhaus Modernism, translated into the luxurious materiality of jewellery. In total, approximately 2.10 ct of diamonds are set, bathing the ring in a dazzling light. The largest diamond, a sparkling stone of about 0.71 ct in the historic “Old European Cut,” is staged as the pistil of a wildly flourishing flower. The center of the design is divided by synthetic sapphires cut to match, forming two diagonal lines. Below them, two additional large old-cut diamonds are intertwined with leaf motifs. Stepped ring shoulders and an ornamental side band complete this total work of art. The cuts of the diamonds, the ring’s design, and the craftsmanship—featuring a platinum ring face set on a white gold gallery and band—allow us to date the ring to the heyday of Art Deco. A precious and creative collector’s piece with magnificent presence on the finger!
