“Day and Night” earrings consist of two parts that can be worn together or separately. The idea is that during the day, the top part alone adds sparkle and beauty; in the evening, with the dangling pendants attached, the earrings shine even more festively and luxuriously. This pair of earrings elegantly embodies this concept, which dates back to the 19th century. The upper section features two magnificent corals accompanied by sparkling diamonds. These are vintage diamonds in the so-called “Old Mine Cut,” totaling approximately 1.75 ct. They are set in platinum and white gold settings. Below, connected by another diamond, a teardrop-shaped coral is attached to each earring in a movable setting. It can be removed, allowing the earrings to be worn as long, elegant pendants or as sparkling studs. It is not entirely easy to say exactly when the earrings were made. The cuts of the diamonds suggest that they were likely cut as early as the mid-19th century. Their platinum-on-white-gold settings, however, may have been created later, since white gold did not come into regular use until around 1920: The combination with platinum is quite typical of early white gold jewelry, so we date them to the 1920s. Finally, the mountings on the back of the large corals at the top were made even later: they consist of a different white gold alloy than the diamond settings. The earrings were thus created more recently using antique elements. Perhaps the diamonds in their settings and the lustrous, high-quality corals have formed a unified whole since the 1920s, or perhaps they were only recently combined: this can no longer be determined in retrospect. After all, the individual elements complement each other perfectly! The diamonds nestle perfectly against the coral buttons, the overall effect of the earrings is striking, and the concept of “day-and-night” earrings is as charming as it is practical. We discovered the earrings in Munich. They are in perfect condition.
