Exquisite Art Deco Ring With 2.01 ct Diamonds Set in Platinum, c. 1930

The 1920s and early thirties knew only one fashion in the field of jewellery: the fashion of white jewels. Platinum was especially popular. Although the metal had been known since antiquity, it received little attention for a long time; not least because its high melting temperature of around 1,768 °C made it difficult to process for a long time. In Spanish, it was even referred to somewhat derogatorily as "platina" ("little silver"), from which our current name is derived. It was not until the turn of the 20th century that improved smelting processes enabled the triumph of the metal, which allows far finer and more detailed work than gold or even silver. The most precious metal in the world at the time was valued above all for its light colour, which excellently enhances the effect of white diamonds. It was precisely this combination that gave rise to jewellery pieces of the radiant, cool elegance so favoured by Art Deco. We see all these qualities in this ring: set with twenty-five white diamonds, its domed and filigree platinum ring face appears like delicate lace of white light. This type of jewellery with set stones in a concave curvature is known as "Bombé" jewellery. Especially the wonderful center stone of the composition captures the eye. The stone is shaped in the historic old European cut and weighs about 1.30 carats. It shows fiery reflections in from a warm, soft light. Other old European cut, octagonal cut and rose cut diamonds in perfectly crafted settings add further points of light. The ring is in first class condition and inspires with its precious setting.
