Dassi’s furniture, made between the 1940s and 1950s, is distinguished by its choice of precious woods such as rosewood, cherry, ash, and walnut, often decorated with inlaid panels and glass signed by renowned glass masters. Elegant in design, yet without sacrificing functional quality, his furniture can be combined with the refined style of Gio Ponti, with whom Vittorio was closely linked through significant collaborations after taking over from his father at the Dassi Mobili Moderni company in Lissone. Among the factory’s most important projects was, in fact, the furniture for the rooms of the Hotel Royal in Naples, designed by Ponti in the mid-1950s, a period that marks Dassi’s turning point towards more schematic forms and teak wood for the production of modular furniture. In general, Italian modernist designers remained deeply attached to and influenced by their artisanal traditions. But their contribution to defining modernism was decisive also and above all because it was defined by a considerable dose of artistic liberalism. The aesthetic diversity within the movement itself was vast: pieces like this 1960s desk in steel and rosewood by Gianni Moscatelli for Formanova seem to blend Danish and Dutch elements; While the legendary Gio Ponti created designs in oak, mahogany, and antler that exude an exquisitely Italian sensibility, Vittorio Dassi’s mid-century desks, with their contrasting materials and forms, illustrate another distinctly Italian modernist characteristic. For over a century, La Permanente Mobili di Cantù has given voice to visionary designers, transforming their innovative ideas into timeless design icons. The history of furniture design cannot overlook the legacy of such a significant institution as the Consorzio La Permanente Mobili, founded in 1893 by a group of highly skilled artisans from Cantù. Their aim was to pool their efforts to showcase their work to the public—primarily in Milan at the time—in a single, grand exhibition space. Beyond its commercial role, the consortium has always been a vital hub for its members, fostering collaboration, dialogue, and the exchange of knowledge. Over the years, this continuous exchange of knowledge and experience has been fundamental in consolidating Cantù furniture as a symbol of excellence worldwide.
