Descriptio In bronze with a beautiful patina befitting its age and exquisite details. Origin: Burma (present-day Myanmar). Dating: Late 16th to early 17th century. Material: Bronze. Dimensions: 30 × 17 × 9 cm. Provenance: Important European private collection, before 1979, formerly the Euduald Serra Collection. Description: Bronze sculpture representing the enthroned Buddha Jambupati, depicted as a universal sovereign, following an iconography that achieved considerable diffusion in Burmese Buddhist art. The Buddha is seated on a high, stepped throne of architectural structure, composed of different registers and superimposed moldings. The figure adopts the bhumisparsha mudra, or “earth as witness” gesture, with the right hand lowered towards the knee while the left remains on the lap. This gesture alludes to the episode immediately preceding Enlightenment, when the Buddha invokes the Earth as a witness to the merits accumulated before Mara. The representation is notable for its rich attire and regal ornamentation. The torso is covered in elaborate ornamental elements and jewels, while the head is crowned with a complex, multi-pointed tiara, culminating in a tall central finial. Particularly characteristic are the large, openwork, flame-shaped lateral extensions that frame the head and give the sculpture a pronounced verticality and a ceremonial silhouette. The image corresponds to the so-called Jambupati Buddha, derived from the tradition that the powerful King Jambupati, proud of his wealth and authority, was confronted by the Buddha, who for this purpose assumed the appearance of a monarch of unparalleled magnificence. Adorned with a crown, jewels, and royal attributes, the Buddha symbolically manifests his status as universal sovereign, or Chakravartin, demonstrating that the spiritual authority of the Dharma is above earthly power and wealth. This particular iconography of the crowned Buddha was prominent in Burma during the Ava period and in related regional traditions, resulting in images characterized by elaborate crowns, princely ornaments, and large, flaming side elements. Classification: The complexity of the crown, its tall central finial, the wide, openwork ornamental extensions flanking the head, the abundance of royal attributes, and the stepped structure of the throne allow the work to be linked to the Burmese sculptural tradition of Jambupati Buddha.
