Ewer - Gilt bronze - French Neo-Renaissance

Large French Renaissance Revival bronze aiguière / ewer, dating from the late 19th century, with richly cast and chased decoration and a striking two tone gilt and dark patinated finish. This impressive decorative bronze vessel is characteristic of the Renaissance Revival taste that became particularly popular in France during the 19th century. The design draws strongly on 15th and 16th century Renaissance metalwork, combining a monumental bulbous body with elaborate scrolling ornament, foliate relief, sculptural details and an imposing curved handle and spout. The ewer features extensive high relief decoration across the body, including scrolling foliage and ornamental motifs. The large openwork handle is particularly elaborate and incorporates sculptural decoration, while the broad curved spout adds to the strongly architectural character of the piece. The raised decoration contrasts beautifully with the darker aged patination of the bronze, while areas of the original or historic gilded finish remain visible across the prominent elements. The construction is substantial, with a stepped circular foot and assembled decorative components. The underside of the foot bears a single impressed oval punch reading “JBS”, positioned horizontally but upside down in relation to the normal viewing orientation. No other maker’s name, signature, logo or foundry mark is present. The significance of the JBS punch has not been conclusively identified. The combination of Renaissance Revival design, elaborate cast ornament, sculptural handle, chased details and contrasting gilded and dark patinated surfaces places this piece firmly within the tradition of 19th century European decorative bronzes, particularly French production of the period. The piece displays the attractive signs of age expected from an antique bronze, including variations in patination, surface wear and areas where the gilded surface has diminished, revealing the darker bronze beneath. These characteristics contribute to its authentic antique appearance.
