Condition: Conservation status in keeping with its age. Shows signs of use and aging, slight superficial wear and small localized losses of the pictorial layer. The work has been re-primed in a historical conservation intervention. See detailed photographs. 2. DESCRIPTION Interesting genre scene belonging to the European realist tradition of the late 19th century, depicting two elderly men focused around a table during a domino game. The composition unfolds in an intimate, nocturnal interior. A green-shaded desk lamp occupies the central axis of the scene and constitutes the main light source, illuminating the table, the domino tiles, and the faces of the two players. The figure on the left leans over the table, holding the tiles and resting the head on a hand, in a posture of concentration and fatigue. Facing him, the second figure watches the game with hands clasped, introducing an interesting psychological contrast between them. The painting stands out for the narrative simplicity of the scene and the artist’s ability to transform a quotidian moment into a depiction of strong human character. 3. STYLISTIC AND COMPOSitional ANALYSIS The work is part of European genre painting developed in the second half of the 19th century, closely linked to Realism and Naturalism. The composition centers around the table, which functions as the true stage of the action. The domino tiles create a clear geometric structure that leads the eye toward the center of the scene. The lamp is the visual and luminous balancing point. Its green shade introduces one of the few strong chromatic accents within a palette dominated by earth tones, browns, ochres, and blacks. The left-hand character appears completely focused on the game, with his head resting on his hand and his gaze directed at the tiles. His posture conveys reflection, fatigue, and perhaps a certain concern about how the game will unfold. The player on the right adopts a calmer, more expectant attitude, watching his opponent with hands clasped. The absence of other figures and the concentration of lighting around the players reinforce the sense of isolation and silence. The scene corresponds to a typology widely disseminated during this period: ordinary interiors featuring popular or bourgeois characters, treated from a realist and narrative perspective. The concrete attribution remains open, and any future identification should be supported by a comparative study of the signature, provenance documentation, or technical analysis of the work. 6.
