European school (XIX) - Ragazzo con pipa

With frame 37x51cm Without frame 25x38cm This oil painting on canvas seems inspired by 17th-century iconographic types (such as portraits of smokers or boys with pipes of Caravaggesque or Flemish derivation), but it exhibits stylistic features and materials typical of an academic, workshop, or decorative reproduction probably made between the 19th and 20th century. Main visual features: • Subject: A young man in historical clothing with a dark cap, a ochre/yellow jacket tied at the waist with a red sash, and a long pipe in his hand from which smoke issues. • Setup/Composition: It recalls the "smokers" and popular subjects of Northern or Caravaggesque type (with a setup that evokes works like The Boy Blowing on a Live Ember by El Greco or Flemish genre portraits). • Frame and support: The canvas shows cracking and surface wear, while the gilded and patinated frame reflects an antiquarian taste or from a junk-shop/minor art auction.
