European school (XIX) - De architect

An impressive late-19th-century portrait of a Belgian architect, portrayed in a self-assured pose at a richly carved drafting desk with plans and drawing materials. The sitter wears formal attire with a bow tie and holds a pencil in his hand, referring to his profession. The sober green background emphasizes the characterful face and the stately bearing of the model. The work testifies to a refined academic painting manner, characteristic of Belgian portraiture from the late 19th century. The monumental dimensions and the original gilded frame enhance the painting's representational and decorative character. Due to its size and weight, shipping is not an option; the lot can be collected in Haren, Groninge
