Erminio Kremp (1860 - 1936) - Le Piramidi di Giza al crepuscolo - XL format

ERMINIO KREMP (Italian, 1860 – Palermo, 1936) Giza Pyramids at Twilight Oil on canvas, 85 x 148 cm Signed ‘E. CREMP’ at the bottom right Frame size, 100 x 163 x 5 cm approx. NOTE: Publication in the catalog of works from the Intermidiart collection. Work signed at the bottom right. Certificate of Guarantee and Legitimate Provenance. Work with a molded and gilded wooden frame (flaws): The painting depicts a river landscape with an orientalist imprint, set on the banks of the Nile with the monumental backdrop of the Pyramids of Giza. The chromatic transition yields the serene atmosphere of twilight: the sky takes on a warm ochre-gold hue that reflects directly on the water’s surface in the foreground, creating strong luminous contrasts with the riverbanks. To the left of the composition, the presence of an ancient shaduf (the typical balance hydraulic machine used to lift water) is evident, flanked by local figures engaged in drawing water or bathing along the shore. On the opposite bank, to the right, a dense palm grove rises, partly concealing architectural stone structures that can be likened to fortifications or rural settlements, near which a figure on a camel rides by. The spatial arrangement is organized on parallel planes, where the geometric, azure shapes of the distant pyramids balance the vibrant and anecdotal daily life that unfolds along the shores. Although official historiography tends to associate the work of the German-Hungarian artist Erminio Kremp mainly with the celebrated marine and coastal views of Palermo Gulf and Sicily — a line in which he moved in close stylistic harmony with master Michele Catti and the references to Francesco Lojacono — his production also boasts a nucleus of exquisitely refined paintings with exotic motifs, tied to the taste and allure of the Near East and ancient Egypt. This painting fully belongs to the fascination with Orientalism that captivated European painters at the turn of the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. Kremp departs from the stereotyped gaze or the academic precision of early Orientalists, instead employing a fluid painting technique sensitive to atmospheric effects. The brushwork, rich and thick in the vegetation areas and the liquid reflections of the water, testifies to the assimilation of plein-air studies of truth typical of the Sicilian landscape school of the period, transposed into a dreamlike, timeless dimension. Appearances on the art market of works with Orientalist and Egyptian subjects signed by Erminio Kremp testify to the artist’s solid presence in the catalogues of major national and international auction houses. Canvases depicting desert scenes, oases, or the banks of the Nile maintain strong market interest among collectors passionate about late 19th and early 20th-century painting for their iconographic rarity compared to the more common production of Sicilian seascapes. The work is recommended for its excellent handling of light and for its impeccable compositional balance. The work is offered in excellent overall conservation condition, proportionate to the time of execution. The canvas retains good surface tension on the frame, free of distortions or structural weaknesses. The color is stable, cohesive, and well anchored to the support. No pigment lift or flaking is recorded. Age-related craquelure is natural, even, and does not disturb the reading of the painting. The protective varnish shows a physiological and light yellowing that, however, harmonizes with the warm and golden tones of the Egyptian sunset. Only a minimal superficial dust deposit is noted. The painting is enhanced by a gilded wooden frame that is structurally solid and presents an aged patina with slight and normal signs of time (frame size, 100 x 163 x 5 cm, presence of flaws). “The frame shown in the photos above has been added to the artwork by the seller or a third party. The frame is provided at no additional cost so that it is ready to display as soon as it arrives. The frame is included as a courtesy and is not considered an integral part of the artwork. Therefore, any potential damage to the frame that does not affect the artwork itself will not be accepted as valid grounds to file a claim or request order cancellation.” Provenance: Private collection from Sicily. Work housed at the Foundation L’Immacolata for Art and Culture. Publication: - I Miti e il Territorio nella Sicilia dalle mille culture. INEDITA QUADRERIA general catalog of the collection of the cycle “I Miti e il Territorio,” 2026 (Pdf). The work will be shipped — due to its large size — with a wooden crate and polystyrene.
