Émile Frechon (1848–1921) - Cimitero musulmano in Algeria (Biskra / Blida)

Émile Frechon (1848–1921) Scene in Algeria: Muslim Cemetery (Biskra / Blida), circa 1900 Rare and evocative original vintage photograph in the pictorialist taste created by the French master Émile Frechon during his famous sojourns in North Africa between the late 19th century and the very early years of the 20th century. The work depicts an Islamic cemetery (traditionally located in Biskra, but bearing a faint contemporaneous pencil note on the back indicating Blida), immersed in the characteristic ethereal, timeless atmosphere typical of avant-garde photographic Orientalism. Technical specifications: - Author: Émile Frechon (1848–1921) - Technique: Vintage gelatin silver print with warm-toning (gold toning) on handmade hand-coated paper prepared/ emulsioned by the author (hand-coated paper). - Dimensions: approximately 28 × 22 cm - Stamps and inscriptions: Original Émile Frechon stamp impression on the back; handwritten contemporaneous pencil annotation "Blida" on the verso. - Era: circa 1900 Critical framing: A leading figure of French Pictorialism and linked to the Photo-Club de Paris, Frechon stood out for rejecting purely documentary or tourist photography, favoring complex handcrafted processes, manually emulsified papers and chemical tonings that confer on his Algerian views a plastic and painterly rendering, today held in important collections and international museums. Conservation conditions: Original vintage print on handmade support. A small repaired tear is noted (now barely perceptible on the front), slight fraying/very small tears along the left white border and mild waviness/imperfections typical of hand-treated paper, as clearly documented in the detail images. Image shows a scenery in Biskra, Algeria, most likely an Islamic cemetery, by Émile Frechon (1848–1921) with his stamp on the reverse. There is a faint notation in pencil on the reverse reading Blida, so this might be the cemetery in Blida. AGE: around 1900 PROCESS: gelatin silver print, toned, on handcoated paper DIMENSIONS: 28 x 22 approx; repaired tear, now barely visible on the front, small tears in left border, some imperfections, as illustrated in the scans. French photographer Émile Frechon (1848–1921) is known for his pictorialism-influenced views of the Orient, often carried out on hand-coated paper with gold toning. #Orientalism
