Elegant Necklace with Ceylon Sapphire & Diamonds, Mariage, From Our Workshop

Pieces of jewellery that combine elements of older jewels into a new composition are referred to as Mariage, after the French word for wedding or marriage. This Mariage is also evident in this necklace from our workshop. Here, two historic jewelry elements—both created during the Belle Époque—have been brought together. The centerpiece is a striking blue sapphire weighing approximately 5.90 ct. The stone, faceted in the antique style, comes from Ceylon—now Sri Lanka—one of the most traditional and famous sources of sapphires. It is particularly noteworthy that the stone shows no signs of having been heated and that its sky-blue colour is entirely natural. It is set within an entourage of thirteen old-cut diamonds totaling approximately 2.40 ct, whose vibrant sparkle effectively highlights the sapphire’s blue hue. The finely openwork central section above it dates from the same period. Its delicate, diamond-set tendrils and arches are characteristic of the elegant design language of the Belle Époque c. 1910. The jewelry element is crafted from yellow gold and doubled with platinum on the visible side, a technique typical of high jewellery from that era. Additional diamonds in historical cuts, totaling approximately 0.15 ct, create delicate points of light within it. In our workshop, we finally joined the two jewelry elements together and complemented them with a delicate platinum chain. Precisely because both pieces date from the same era, they blend together particularly harmoniously. The delicate ornamentation of the center piece leads the eye to the large sapphire, while the rich diamond setting visually connects the two elements. Thus, from two Belle Époque jewels, a new necklace was created in our workshop that preserves the character of its historical components while giving them a new purpose. With its untreated Ceylon sapphire, the historic diamonds, and the fine platinum and goldsmith’s work, it combines the elegance of the turn of the century with a unique design that is once again perfectly wearable today.
