Elegant Natural Pearl and Sapphire Pendant Necklace, c. 1920 and later

The jewels of the early 20th century were intended to be delicate, slender and elegant. This pendant corresponds to this style and is a long pendulum set with pearls and sapphires. The design is divided into two parts. At the top is a delicate pendant eyelet set with a small diamond. Attached to this is a shiny rod, which finally bears a rhombus of sapphires and pearls at the bottom. The sky-blue sapphires shine brightly and mark the corners of the square. The pearls occupy the space between them, with two of each connecting the sapphires. The absence of any historical ornamentation demonstrates the modernity of the design. The guiding principle was geometry and the desire to present precious gifts of nature in such a way that they can showcase their own beauty in the best possible way. The pendant is nonetheless skillfully designed: the materials create an enchanting, wintry harmony of colours, and the round shapes of the gemstones contrast beautifully with the geometry of the man-made forms. The piece of jewellery was probably originally created as a brooch, an elongated bar brooch with two slender bars on either side of the gem-set square. You can see with a magnifying glass that something has been sawn off at the lower end. The upper loop with the diamond was also added when it was changed into a pendant. The design and workmanship correspond to the first decades after 1900; the workmanship in white gold indicates that the pendant was only created after the First World War, as white gold was not yet widely used. We therefore date it to around 1920 and the conversion to a pendant took place only a little later. We discovered the pendant in London. The hallmark on the side reveals that it was made in Great Britain. We have added the chain to the pendant: it was newly made for us in Germany from white gold and its finesse matches the pendant wonderfully.
