Descriptio Stucco, Sycamore Wood, Traces of Polychromy, Size 22 x 14.5 x 10 cm. Provenance: European private collection. This Egyptian funerary mask, dating from the Late Period (722-332 BC), is carved from sycamore wood, covered with stucco, and decorated with traces of polychromy. Its main function was to protect and honor the face of the deceased on their journey to the afterlife, reflecting Egyptian religious beliefs about life after death. This type of mask formed part of the funerary regalia and usually covered the head of the mummified deceased, symbolizing the immortality of the soul. The mask presents an idealized face, with almond-shaped eyes emphasized by dark eyeliner, gently curved lips, and a serene expression that conveys calm and eternity. The facial details show a combination of naturalism and stylization, characteristic of Egyptian funerary art of this period. Traces of polychromy suggest that it was originally decorated with vibrant colors, each hue laden with symbolic meaning: red and yellow for vitality and gold for divinity. Although it shows some cracks and material loss due to the passage of time, the mask is well preserved, allowing us to glimpse both its original function and its artistic and cultural value. This object testifies to the technical skill and spiritual depth of the ancient Egyptians, as well as their belief in the transcendence of the soul.
