Egyptian Faience Necklace w/ 5 Amulets & Roman Tool

Egypt, Late Dynastic to Roman Period, ca. 664 BCE to 4th century CE; Roman, Imperial period, ca. 1st to 3rd century CE. A varied and evocative group bringing together personal devotion, adornment, and medical practice from the ancient Mediterranean world. The lot includes five Egyptian faience amulets, a wearable necklace composed of dozens of Egyptian faience beads restrung in modern times, and a Roman brass surgical implement, offering a compact survey of ancient daily life and belief. The amulets are carved in faience and depict a range of human and animal forms, their simplified silhouettes and glazed surfaces characteristic of Late Dynastic to Roman period production. Such objects were worn or carried as protective charms, intended to invoke divine guardianship, healing, or good fortune. Their surviving turquoise, green, and earthen tones speak to the long-standing symbolic power of color in Egyptian ritual culture. Size of necklace: 31" L (78.7 cm); of largest amulet: 0.7" W x 2.2" H (1.8 cm x 5.6 cm) Accompanying the amulets is a necklace comprised of numerous Egyptian faience beads, including discs and tubular elements, restrung on a modern cord to allow for contemporary wear. While the strand is modern, the beads themselves preserve the tactile rhythm and visual language of ancient adornment, once associated with protection, regeneration, and social identity. Completing the group is a Roman brass surgical implement, its slender shaft and carefully shaped terminal reflecting the advanced medical knowledge of the Roman world. Such tools were used by physicians in procedures ranging from minor treatments to more complex interventions, underscoring the practical realities of ancient healthcare. Together, these objects create a compelling assemblage that bridges belief, beauty, and science, linking the intimate rituals of Egyptian spirituality with the pragmatic innovations of Roman medicine. A Certificate of Authenticity will accompany all winning bids. Item # 197610
