Dry Tree and Side View of the Lombard House / 1931 by Edward Hopper. @2024 Heirs of Josephine Hopper / Licensed by Artist Rights Society (ARS) Madrid / Vegan. Ever since 1930, when Hopper and his wife, Jo, began spending their summers in South Truro, a small town on Cape Cod, the area’s houses, lighthouses, and luminous landscapes began to appear repeatedly in his paintings and watercolors. Dry Tree and Side View of the Lombard House, one of the many watercolors created during Hopper’s second summer there, is a characteristic depiction of one of the area’s houses. It depicts the home of his friend Frank Lombard, which also appears in another watercolor from the same summer, viewed from a different perspective. In the work at the Thyssen-Bornemisza Museum, it is depicted from its shaded side facade, and the formalistic treatment of the sandy, yellowish earth and the geometry of the building lend the scene a certain abstract quality. In his “Notes on Painting,” the artist, referring to works similar to this one, mentioned the “simplifications I have dared to make.” What gives this watercolor its originality and sets it apart from others with similar themes is the silhouette of the dead tree to the left of the building. Set against the bright sky, its dark, twisted branches contrast with the white, straight mast at the center of the composition. Furthermore, its presence—so rare in the height of summer—lends the scene an air of desolation and demonstrates Hopper’s ability to imbue such a simple, everyday subject with an eerie atmosphere and meaning. The presence of dead trees that appear in his earlier and later watercolors has generally been interpreted as a sign of the painter’s existential pessimism. Be that as it may, its skeletal form adds a touch of melancholy to the solitary house and the silence of the place—a silence we can almost hear as we contemplate this work. Measurements: 75 x 68 cm. All posters are original and have been selected by art lovers for art lovers. Collector's item. This item is shipped certified with a tracking number and carefully protected. .
