EDWARD DAYES (BRITISH 1763-1804) RHAEADR DU, GWYNEDD Grey and blue wash over pencil Inscribed 'Rhaidr Du or Balck Fall nr Tany Bwlch' (on the reverse, according to the previous cataloguing) 24 x 37.5cm (9¼ x 14¾in.) Provenance: Andrew Wyld Fine Art, London, 2011 The collection of Russell Worby Waterfalls acted as magnets for the Picturesque tourist, painter and poet and in the 1780s and 1790s Dayes travelled to Wales (another view in Denbighshire in the collection of the Whitworth Art Gallery, Manchester is dated 1783), Derbyshire and Yorkshire, where he described the waterfall Aysgarth Force, see Edward Dayes, The Works of Edward Dayes containing and Excursion through the principal parts of Derbyshire and Yorkshire ..., 1805. Thomas Girtin (1775-1802) was a pupil of Dayes, whose drawing style strongly influenced the young Turner.
