The scene is the South of France — the Riviera or Marseille, where Édouard Collin spent the second half of his life. Collin (1906–1983), a pupil of Maurice Denis and Pierre Laurens and winner of the Grand Prix de Rome for painting in 1932, was a founder member of the Salon de Mai and one of the great French poster artists of the mid-century, designer of the famous posters for the liner ‘Liberté’ and the French Line. His drawings show the same sure, economical hand as his graphic work. Signed ‘Edouard Collin’ at the lower left. Framed under glass.
