EDMOND BROCK (BRITISH, 1882-1952): PORTRAIT OF A BLONDE BOY....

EDMOND BROCK (BRITISH, 1882-1952): PORTRAIT OF A BLONDE BOY....

EDMOND BROCK (BRITISH, 1882-1952): PORTRAIT OF A BLONDE BOY. wearing a white open necked shirt, white shorts and socks, and brown leather shoes, seated on an upholstered stool, signed in red lower right and dated 1917, with paper label to frame describing sitter and artist, but sadly only partially legible, possibly reading "Peter ... TJG Duncanson By Edmond Brock ..... Mayfield .... ?", 113 by 84cm, in gilt composition frame, 104 by 134cm. Provenance: from a deceased estate / private family collection dating back to early 20th century. Notes (courtesy of Art UK): Edmond Brock was born in London in 1882, the youngest son of the sculptor Sir Thomas Brock (1847–1922). Educated at Bedford School and showed early promise as a portrait painter. In 1903, while still only 20, he exhibited portraits of his father's friends, Viscount Esher and Sir Aston Webb at the Royal Academy. He was a regular exhibitor at the Academy until 1938, showing over 50 portraits. In the 1920s and 1930s, Edmond's most faithful patron was Lady Londonderry, a society hostess who entertained lavishly at Mount Stewart, her stately home in Northern Ireland, and at Londonderry House in Park Lane. Edmond was christened 'Charles Edmond', and by an unfortunate coincidence another (unrelated) Brock, Charles Edmund Brock, born 1870 in Cambridge, was also a portrait painter, exhibiting at the Royal Academy between 1897 and 1899. To have two artists exhibiting at the Academy with virtually identical names was clearly undesirable, so an amicable solution was reached. The Cambridge Brock agreed to use the name Charles and drop Edmund, while the London Brock would use Edmond and omit Charles. Despite this, some confusion continued. In 2005 Auctioneer's John Nicholson sold an impressive and important group portrait painted by Edmond Brock of Her Majesty The Queen and her children, Their Royal Highnesses Princess Elizabeth and Princess Margaret Rose, sold with a letter from Her Majesty The Queen to Edmond Brock and dated November 13th, 1933. This sold for £24,000 plus fees. Condition: Paint layer looks good except for several small areas of mould build up. This painting had been wrapped up and held in a storage container for several years and the moisture has had an effect. The frame is solid but with some losses and wear the to the edges. Fees and Auction Terms: Buyer's Premium: 30% (Incl. VAT) PLUS Hammer Fee of £5 (Incl. VAT) Per Lot Please note that there is no Right of Withdrawal and that special terms apply for Hammer Auctions.
