Elegant oil on canvas belonging to the European school of the 20th century, depicting a young woman dressed in attire with a marked folkloric character, delicately holding a small bouquet of flowers. The composition centers on the female figure, shown in half-body and slightly turned. Notably the treatment of the face, with idealized features and serene expression, as well as the use of soft lighting that shapes the flesh tones and makes the figure emerge against a predominantly dark background, stand out. The young woman is adorned with large hoop earrings and red flowers in her hair, elements which, together with the color of the dress and shawl, give the scene a certain Mediterranean and romantic character. The painter also introduces an abundant floral presence both between the protagonist’s hands and in the lower part of the composition, enriching chromatically a palette dominated by deep tones. It is interesting to note the contrast between the relatively precise and delicate treatment of the face and a considerably freer, more gestural brushwork in the robes, flowers, and secondary elements. The yellows, reds, greens, and blues are applied with visible brushstrokes, providing movement and brightness to the composition. The work is framed within the European tradition of figurative and genre painting, heir to the romantic and orientalist models of the 19th century, which continued to have a significant presence in salon and genre painting during the first decades of the 20th century. In the lower left corner a signature of difficult reading appears, executed in a reddish tone. The painting is presented with a substantial gilt frame of historicist taste, richly ornamented, which considerably reinforces its decorative presence. Condition: The work shows signs of age and use compatible with its chronology.
