DUMAS (Alexandre). Cécile. Paris, [Imprimerie hydraulique de Giroux et Vialat] Dumont, 1844. 2 volumes in-8, red Russian half-leather, crowned gilt numeral at center of boards, smooth spine decorated (Period binding). First edition of this little-known novel by Dumas, published the same year as Les Trois mousquetaires. A fine copy, bound in pamphlet with the cipher of Marie-Louise. Louise (1791-1847), Duchess of Parma and Empress of the French from 1810 to 1814. The eldest daughter of Francis of Austria and great-niece of the former queen Marie-Antoinette, Marie-Louise of Austria married Napoleon Bonaparte in 1810. From their union Napoleon II, known as L'Aiglon, King of Rome and Duke of Reichstadt. After the Hundred Days and the fall of the Emperor, the Congress of Vienna granted her the Duchy of Parma, where she settled permanently in March 1816. Some light foxing.
