Rare eighteenth-century book in a very large folio format (see photos). Authorized by the assembly of 1775, and printed by order of the clergy. Precís of the Reports of the Agency of the Clergy of France, by subject matter The “Precís of the Reports of the Agency of the Clergy of France, by subject matter” is a major historical work published in 1786 in Paris by the printer Guillaume Desprez. The work gathers and synthesizes ecclesiastical affairs dealt with by the General Agency of the Clergy of France over more than a century, from the year 1660 to 1780. At the request of the Archbishop of Arles in 1755, this work of organization was entrusted to Messrs. Du Saulzet and Gandin to structure and make accessible the voluminous dossiers, memoranda, petitions and consultations managed by the general agents of the clergy under the Ancien Régime. The work is arranged in a methodical order by subject matter (and supplemented by an alphabetical table) to document ecclesiastical public law, the clergy’s taxation (including the free donation), privileges, and the relations between the Church of France and the monarchy. Prestigious grand folio volume (41 x 27 cm), printed in two columns, with a title in red and black. Full leather bindings of the period, with title piece, very large folio formats (41 x 27.5 cm), headings, culs-de-lampe, printed in two columns, back with raised bands ornamented, staining, pagination by column, title page in red and black, red edges, vignettes beautifully engraved on title pages, initials, a very beautiful rare eighteenth-century complete exemplar (see attached photos). Condition: Good overall condition for its age. Old solid binding. Signs of wear and handling stains. Interior well preserved overall with a strong decorative presence. (see photos). The work contains numerous ornamental initials, headings and culs-de-lampe engraved, typical of the major Parisian productions of the eighteenth century. Pagination: xvi + tables + 1708 pages.
