Dronino meteorite Iron meteorite - Height: 13.5 cm - Width: 6.5 cm - 102 g

The Dronino meteorite is an iron meteorite that was discovered in July 2000 in Ryazan Oblast in Russia, near the village of Dronino and the town of Kasimov • Oleg Gus'kov found the first piece weighing 40 kilograms during pancake/mushroom hunting. • Total Known Weight (TKW): Approximately 3,000 kg of fragments, spread over more than 600 pieces. • Depth: Found at a depth of 0.2 to 2 meters in an area of 0.5 by 1.5 kilometers. • Impact: Formed a sunken crater about 30 meters wide. The impact probably occurred before the 12th century (before 1200). Composition and Features: • Classification: Ungrouped iron meteorite of the ataxite type. • Appearance: Has a unique, heavily weathered and pitted surface with a thick layer of rust, because the meteorite has lay for thousands of years in damp soil. • Pattern: Does not exhibit a Widmanstätten pattern (a typical crystalline structure pattern in iron meteorites) when etched due to the high nickel content.
