Artist Resale Rights Apply Douglas Wain-Hobson (1918-2001) - Recovery, bronze, 1953, 181cm h, unique Provenance: Commissioned for St James' Hospital, Balham and installed by the entrance to the outpatients department in December 1953; relocated to the garden of St George's Hospital, Tooting in 1988; The hospital's St George's Arts Trust, having been unsuccessful in giving it to The Public Monuments & Sculptures Association (succeeded by The Public Statues & Sculpture Association) on the grounds of prohibitive cost of removal, installation and insurance; offered to and accepted by the present vendor, a son of the artist and by whom sited in the garden of the family home on Anglesey and latterly in a Herefordshire orchard The name of the mid-20th century young British sculptor, medallist and painter Douglas Wain-Hobson may be unfamiliar to some but his work was well regarded by Reg Butler, Jacob Epstein and other distinguished contemporaries. Commissions for public sculpture by British and foreign governments, institutions and companies ensured his place in the history of British art of the period. As an adult, his height and military bearing did not belie his name for he was christened after Field Marshall Sir Douglas Haig. Born in Derbyshire, his early gift for drawing led to a scholarship at Sheffield School of Art. He subsequently trained at The Royal College of Art under Richard Garbe in the 1930s and Frank Dobson after WWII. His work was shown at The Festival of Britain in 1951 and in 1953 he was runner-up to Reg Butler in the Universal Political Prisoner Competition, 1953. Wain-Hobson was in good company as the other finalists included Barbara Hepworth, Elisabeth Frink and F E McWilliam. The life-sized Recovery of the same year was commissioned at a cost of £500 for the new wing at St James’ Hospital in Balham, London. The pose and uncompromising male sexuality undisguised by any fig leaf proved so shocking to the local community that the “Leafless Man of Balham” instantly became a subject of ridicule and injured sentiment in equal measure, the story running for some time in the local and even national press.
