Dom Bernard de Montfaucon - L'Antiquité expliquée et représentée en figures

Rare original edition richly illustrated of this in-depth study devoted to the heroic figures of Greco-Roman antiquity who, through their exploits, their prestige, or the religious traditions surrounding them, were elevated to the rank of gods or honored as such by ancient peoples - In this work, Montfaucon continues his erudite method of confronting ancient texts with archaeological evidence in order to reconstruct with precision the beliefs, cults, and iconographic representations of the classical world - He examines legendary figures whose renown was such that they crossed the boundary separating humanity from the divine, notably studying the narratives relating to Hercules, Castor and Pollux, Perseus, Theseus, Aesculapius, Bacchus, as well as many other heroes venerated in different regions of the ancient world - The author traces their mythological origins, their adventures, their military exploits, their travels, their trials and the circumstances that led to their apotheosis. He analyzes the local traditions associated with them, the sanctuaries dedicated to them, the religious ceremonies organized in their honor, and the various forms of cults to which they were subjected - Dom Bernard de Montfaucon - L’Antiquité expliquée et représentée en figures.
