Dirk Cornelis Breed (1920-2004) - Landschap met boom, figuren en kippen

Dirk Breed was born in 1920 in the West Frisian village of Kolhorn near Schagen. In that former fishing village Kolhorn he also spent his youth. In the years of World War II he studied with Thijs Sterk from Schoorl, to in 1946 pursue studies at the Rijksakademie voor Beeldende Kunsten in Amsterdam. There he lived as well and was a member of St. Lucas and De Brug. But he remained a Kolhorner at heart. “I even saw the anchovy fishermen come in there. My entire painterly thinking revolves around the polder, around Kolhorn and the land around it with that atmosphere of enormous openness,” he once said. There the skies were clear and the horizon infinitely far. That is what he wanted to express in his paintings. In 1952 he won the Koninklijke Subsidie with a painting, not with a landscape, but with a portrait painting of his former neighbor girl from Kolhorn. In 1965 he moved to Waverveen, a village that is part of the municipality De Ronde Venen, located south of Amsterdam. Dirk Breed shared his life with his wife Lia, eight years younger, a ceramic artist. They exhibited separately but also together. In 1993 he was one of the Dutch artists who participated in the international manifestation Kunst Salon 1993. Oil on canvas, size 70x95. In the original studio frame. This will be sent with the work free of charge. The work is carefully packed and shipped internationally by registered mail.
