Antique jewellery rarely tells just one story; it often embodies several lives. These elegant drop earrings are a beautiful example of how jewellery adapts across generations to changing fashions and the wishes of its owners. They originated as a pair of delicate diamond earrings from around 1890. By the mid-20th century, filigree-style dangling earrings no longer reflected contemporary tastes, so the two earrings were transformed into a bar brooch. This was a quite common practice at the time—one we continue to observe time and again. Historical jewellery was often not viewed as a sacred, untouchable object, but rather as a living companion that could be reworked, enhanced, and personalized. Today, the circle is complete: We have transformed the brooch back into a pair of drop earrings. In doing so, we have reinterpreted the historic diamond elements in their original vertical arrangement and suspended delicate gray Tahitian pearls from them. In this way, three eras come together to form a new piece of jewellery with ancient roots. We see the artisanal finesse of the Fin de Siècle, the creative exuberance of the 1950s, and a contemporary perspective on historical jewels. The brooch came to us from the Rhineland, and its transformation into earrings took place in our workshop in Berlin.
