Delicate Red Spinel and Seed Pearl Necklace in Gold, British, c. 1900

The blossoming and blooming, even withering flora was one of the most important sources of inspiration for Art Nouveau artists: in their search for a new art that would bring people, uprooted by industrialization and the big cities, back into harmony with themselves and their environment, they turned to natural forms and used them to create their very own, previously unseen designs. This necklace interprets this theme in a typically British way, with a rich setting of seed pearls in luminous, high-carat gold. Delicate curves influenced by Art Nouveau lead to a centerpiece of leaves and flowers. Three natural red spinels cut into cabochons shine here as buds or berries next to white pearls. A delicate chain is attached to the side of the middle section, turning the design into a so-called "necklet", which only features a decorative showpiece on the front and therefore remains understated and wearable during the day. We were able to discover this elegant necklace in London. It is in very good condition and, thanks to its unobtrusive trimming, is also very wearable in everyday life - just as it was once intended.
