In the early years of the 20th century, goldsmiths in Europe achieved a finesse of execution and design like never before. Tastes had changed and were tired of the heavy forms of the 19th century. However, the technical requirements had also developed further: New tools and machines made it possible to work even more finely and precisely. Platinum, for example, now made it possible to create fine yet durable bridges and details that had never been seen before. For all these reasons, the shapes also changed. The designs of these years often look like delicate lace, so fine and light are the details. Brooches and necklaces, earrings and even rings are made of delicate nets, garlands and flowers. This necklace is a wonderful example of this new, light style, which dominated fashion throughout Europe until the First World War. This necklace is a particularly airy child of this period. A symmetrical arrangement of the finest platinum is attached to a delicate chain. Under a pearl surrounded by a shadow gap, two delicate chains hold the actual pendant. The centerpiece forms a network of the finest platinum bars, with small diamonds glittering at the intersections. A delicate flower emerges from the center, the blossoms of which are formed from shimmering natural pearls and another diamond. Five more pearls adorn the triangular lower end, which ends in a movable pendulum. The necklace is handmade and exquisitely decorated. We discovered this well-preserved piece of jewellery here in Berlin.
