Decorative ornament - Germany - : Decorative wall plate

Body of the plate: Embossed and chased brass with a gold patina and dark oxidations. • Central medallion: Made in a lighter-colored metal, probably pewter or a silver alloy, later applied to the plate. • Dimensions: Diameter 48 cm. • Subject: The central medallion depicts the side-by-side profiles of two men. The one on the left, with a beard and short hair, wears a uniform with epaulettes; the one on the right, with long hair and a laurel crown, is a classical portrait. This iconography is typical of German commemorative plates celebrating the Hohenzollern dynasty. It is highly likely that this is a tribute to Wilhelm I (the first profile) and to his son Frederick III (the second, with the laurel crown symbolizing victory and royalty).
