David Teniers le Jeune (1610-1690), After - Intérieur de taverne avec buveurs

Interesting genre scene painted in oil on panel, executed in the manner of David Teniers the Younger, one of the great masters of seventeenth-century Flemish painting and famed for his tavern interiors, peasant scenes and representations of daily life. The composition shows a lively interior crowd in which several characters gather around a table. In the foreground, a man wearing a reddish jacket stands out, seated on a stool and raising a cup, a gesture that concentrates the viewer’s attention and endows the scene with a marked narrative and festive character. Around him, various figures converse, eat or drink, while a woman observes from a side room. The atmosphere is built with a soft, warm lighting, with strong contrasts between the shadowed areas and the bright points. The artist arranges the scene in depth through the interior architecture, the furniture, the utensils and the stepped arrangement of the characters. From a stylistic point of view, the work clearly follows the models of David Teniers the Younger and the Flemish tradition of tavern scenes. It is characteristic of an interest in popular types, the description of humble interiors, the presence of everyday objects and the anecdotal and lightly humorous tone of the representation. The brushwork is meticulous in the figures and freer in certain areas of the surroundings. The chromatic range is based mainly on browns, ochres, blacks and muted greens, animated by the intense red of the main character’s clothing. This chromatic device allows a very defined visual focus within a composition dominated by dark tones. The work reflects the enormous critical and commercial fortune that Teniers’ models achieved during the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries. His peasant scenes were widely copied, reinterpreted and used as inspiration by numerous European painters, especially within the Flemish and Central European traditions. The painting is presented expressly as a work in the manner of David Teniers the Younger, without direct attribution to the master. About David Teniers the Younger David Teniers II, known as David Teniers the Younger, was born in Antwerp in 1610 and died in Brussels in 1690. He was one of the most important Flemish painters of the seventeenth century and developed an extensive output focused mainly on genre scenes, tavern interiors, peasant celebrations, landscapes, religious scenes and representations of alchemists and collectors. He was the son of the painter David Teniers the Elder and was related by marriage to Jan Brueghel the Elder when he married his daughter, Anna Brueghel. He attained enormous professional prestige and worked as court painter to Archduke Leopold Wilhelm of Austria. His compositions are characterized by narrative skill, detailed depiction of daily life, a refined chromatic range, and a special ability to arrange numerous figures within complex interiors. His influence extended for centuries, and especially during the nineteenth century a significant market arose for paintings made “in the manner of Teniers,” inspired by his taverns, smokers, drinkers and peasant scenes. Condition The work shows signs typical of its age and use, including craquelure, surface dirt, wear, small abrasions, possible losses of pictorial material and old restorations or reintegrations. Close examination of the photographs is recommended, as they form an essential part of the description and allow assessing the real conservation status. The frame is included free of charge, with no commercial value. It may show abrasions, knocks, losses of gilding, cracks, restorations or defects arising from its age and use. The frame’s condition will not be subject to a claim. The work will be carefully packed to ensure proper protection during transport. Customs duties, tariffs, import taxes, processing fees and any other charges demanded in the destination country will be the sole responsibility of the buyer.
