This magnificent object is a traditional carved wooden African mask, belonging to the Bamana (or Bambara) people from Mali. Object features • Mask type: This is a Ntomo (or N'tomo) mask. This type of mask is recognizable by its characteristic crown-like summit structure, formed by several horns (or teeth). • Cultural use: The Ntomo mask was used during initiation ceremonies for young boys within the male secret society of the same name.
