Crucifix - Polychrome wood - circa 1600 - Rare Spanish Crucifix

Exceptional Spanish ca 1600 carved wooden corpus of Christ on the cross, retaining original polychrome paintwork. This powerful devotional sculpture originates from Spain and dates to around circa 1600, a period marked by intense realism and emotional depth in Spanish religious art. The figure displays beautifully preserved original polychromy, with expressive wounds, blood traces and sensitively carved anatomy. The dramatic posture and intense facial expression are characteristic of Spanish devotional sculpture, intended to evoke strong emotional engagement and contemplation. One arm has been professionally restored at a later date, a historically common intervention for devotional objects of this age. The restoration is respectful and structurally sound, without disturbing the visual coherence of the sculpture. Such Spanish crucifixes were traditionally used in private chapels, monasteries and oratories and are today increasingly rare on the open market, especially in this size and state of preservation. Origin: Spain Period: Circa 1600 (late 16th – early 17th century) Material: Hand-carved wood with original polychrome paint Dimensions: approx. 60 cm high × 30 cm wide Condition: Very good antique condition. Beautifully preserved original polychromy. One arm is a later restoration/addition, professionally executed. Minor age-related wear consistent with age and devotional use. Structurally sound.
