Cristian Mesa Velazquez - Exhalación

Exhalation Oil on canvas · 58 x 90 cm · 2026 The foreground is almost confrontational: the face fills the horizontal format and the viewer sits within the very explosion of bubbles. It is the exact instant of an exhalation underwater, with an immediacy that is almost photographic, which, however, resolves entirely in brushwork. Dark-framed glasses with yellow frames cover the eyes. On top of the lenses, small hits of white suggest the water’s glare against the curved glass. The nose, with a warm pink that contrasts with the rest of the skin, is the only clear anatomical anchor in the upper half of the face. The technical protagonist is the mouth, or rather what replaces it: a dense, almost spherical mass of white and turquoise bubbles. There the brushwork changes entirely in texture, with thick impasto applied in almost hammer blows, in pure whites and cool turquoises, contrasted with the soft, continuous modeling of the skin. It is the area where the oil ceases to describe and begins to act like the turbulence it represents. Around it, the water resolves into two registers: above and at the sides, an almost white foam that verges on abstraction; below, a greenish turquoise from which the shoulder and an open-finger hand emerge, as if the swimmer were trying to touch the surface of the painting itself.
