CRESCENS (Pierre de). Le Bon mesnager. Au present volume des prouffitz champestres et ruraulx. Paris, [printed by Nicolas Cousteau for] Galliot du Pré, s.d. [at colophon]: January 15, 1533. Gothic folio, red morocco, triple gilt fillet, ornate spine, interior lace, gilt edges (19th century binding). First edition under this title of the most important treatise on rural economics of the Middle Ages. The edition is augmented by a treatise on arboriculture by Gorgole de Corne: La maniere de enter, planter & nourrir tous arbres. Printed in Gothic type on two columns, the title in red and black, it is decorated with 3 woodcut figures: the first, signed with the cross of Lorraine, shows the author offering his book to the king, and the second illustrates sowing in the fields; at the end, a large coat of arms. (Bechtel, C-888; Thiébaud, col. 228-229: "prototype of all rustic rustic houses"). Born in Bologna in the 1230s, Pierre de Crescens wrote his Opus ruralium commodorum around 1305 for Charles II d'Anjou, King of Sicily. In this famous treatise, first published in Latin in 1471 and in French in 1486 (Le Livre des ruraulx prouffitz du labour des champs), he deals in twelve books with rural life, farm management, field work, viticulture, plant and tree cultivation, hunting and fishing.
