The Garibaldian officer narrates with dramatic immediacy that he was surrounded by a Bourbon mob that rose to about 4,000 people and that he was forced to perform acts of public abjuration (displacing/spitting on the effigy and shouting "Long live Francesco II") in order to avoid lynching. He desperately asks for the sending of firearms — including rifles and a "brace of six-shot pistols" (the era’s early revolvers) — to defend himself and reorganize the Garibaldian forces. Transcript Included: "Dear Friend and Brother, We are in extreme moments due to a reaction of murderers. Nevertheless, my breast and my spirit are ready to sacrifice themselves for the Freedom so greatly championed by me. Yesterday, at noon, in the sense of bloodshed, a mob of about four thousand wished to quench themselves, and I had to pronounce, 'Hurrah for Francesco II,' and spit on his effigy with the hand I had the other day brandishing the sabre of Major of the National Guard with the resolve to flash it in the fields of the Hero of Caprera to achieve the unity of our almost entirely redeemed Italy... (Di 8 Oct 1860 - L'A. e Fratello)" Preservation conditions: Excellent for the period. Paper sound, editorial folds of the era well preserved, text intact and without gaps.
