Along with figures such as Karel Appel, Corneille, Anton Rooskens, Jan Nieuwenhuys, Eugene Brands, Lucebert and Theo Wolvecamp, Constant was the more theoretical figure of this style. Constant Nieuwenhuys painted still lifes, self-portraits, animals, flowers and non-figurative works. After a meeting with Asger Jorn, there appeared fantasy animals, as well as aggressive and frightening human figures in his paintings. In 1950 the war paintings emerged. In the late 1950s he developed ideas about the ideal city, New Babylon.
