Conrad Furey Childhood Games

Baie Verte, Newfoundland and Labrador. 1985. A particularly rich recollection of Furey’s Newfoundland childhood, bringing together the games, chores and pastimes of outport life, from hoop rolling and circle dancing to chopping wood, tending the clothesline, boating and playing along the shoreline. Furey often drew directly from memories of growing up in Baie Verte, and here the familiar houses, stages, rowboats, and figures at work and play read almost as a catalogue of childhood experience in coastal Newfoundland. Signed, "Conrad Furey 85", lower right. Beaverbrook Art Gallery label on reverse.
